Innovation Phase
Once children are familiar with the model text, the teacher leads them into creating their own versions. Following a succession of lessons teaching explicit skills, the children then write a practise text. Shared and guided writing is used to develop writing over a number of days so that children are writing their own text paragraph by paragraph, concentrating on bringing all the elements together, writing effectively and accurately. Feedback is given during the lessons so that children can be taught how to improve their writing, make it more accurate, until they can increasingly edit in pairs or on their own. Children can ‘hug’ close to the model text; following the pattern and sentence structure they have internalised, or they can ‘fly’ and exercise originality and individual flare.
