Medical Mavericks by University of Birmingham Y6 29.01.26

Student Reviews of Medical Mavericks

On Thursday, we did Medical Mavericks and we did lots of activities like blood pressure and taking fake blood out of veins. There was an ultrasound machine. We had to put on some gel on our forearms. There was a measuring mat and I measured the same as the shortest basketball player at 162cm. There were glasses and they were all different, we had to try walk in a straight line and I found it very easy. There was a lie detector test and we asked each other questions that made people nervous. The man put on stickers that had wires attached. There was also a monitor where you can see your veins. My favourite activity was the fake blood and veins because I liked that the person helped us and also, we had to put the needle in at a 45-degree angle and then we pulled the fake blood through the tube.

I loved the medical maverick workshop because it was really fun to go around the different stations and try different activities. My favourite stalls were the ultrasound, the lie detector and the blood pressure cuffs. I liked to do them because it was really funny looking inside my arms. My second favourite was definitely the blood pressure cuffs because I liked seeing how high/tight it would get. I liked the lie detector- it really does show the truth! Other than that it was really fun and I enjoyed doing it. I had a good time with my friends and enjoyed learning different things.

Medical Mavericks was awesome! We had to say what NHS stands for. It stands for National Health Service. We were able to take fake blood from a fake arm and we had to use a thermometer that tells us the temperature on our forehead. We also played a game with sticks; you had to grab a band and try to get them through the rings. It was representing key-hole surgery- it was super hard. We also got to use blood pressure monitors on each other- you have to use the left arm.
