"This week we have remembered and marked a significant date in history, in honour of VE Day, our school organised a series of events that not only educated our students about this pivotal moment in history but also allowed them to engage with the stories of those who lived through this challenging time.
We were thrilled to welcome two distinguished guests to our school. Eddie Hill from the Minehead Veterans Group, an ex-RAF member, who shared his personal experiences and insights about VE Day and the impact of the war on our community. Additionally, we had Geoff Lloyd, a local historian from the Minehead Museum, who provided fascinating stories about Minehead during the war years. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn directly from those who have detailed knowledge of that time in history.
Following the assemblies, all students participated in engaging tutor-led activities. These activities involved exploring the stories of VE Day survivors from World War II, fostering a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by many. Students had the chance to discuss and reflect on what respect and remembrance means to them.
Supported by our fantastic Creative Arts team, Mrs James and Mr Foreman, students were invited to make a poppy to add to our poppy installation allowing us to have a space of remembrance for our school community. I am sure you will agree that it looks stunning and knowing that our students contributed to this installation makes it even more special.
To culminate our celebrations, we hosted our VE Day Street Party! Students were encouraged to come dressed in patriotic red, white, and blue to honour the spirit of the occasion. There was a variety of treats as well as games from the 1940s, allowing everyone to experience a slice of life from that era while having fun with their classmates.
We know that as a community how important it is to provide moments of celebration alongside remembrance and come together to honour those who contributed to our freedom and create lasting memories for our students and thanks to the staff team at MMS this is just what we did this week. I am thankful and proud of the staff team who have gone above and beyond to make this happen for our children. This teamwork, going above and beyond and passion for providing the best experience for each young person is what makes Minehead Middle School a very special place and I am proud to lead such a dedicated, kind team of staff and children."
