A high quality science education not only provides the foundations for understanding the world around us, but equips pupils with essential knowledge and life skills needed in a changing world. At Minehead Middle School science is taught in attainment groups in years 7 and 8, by specialist science teachers and in mixed attaining classes in years 5 and 6 by the year group teams.
The new National Curriculum is followed in all year groups with a bespoke themed approach in Key Stage 2. The Oxford University Press ‘Activate’ programme of study is then taught in Key Stage 3; this enables pupils to engage with up to date, relevant and interesting concepts thereby providing a solid foundation for further work in years 9, 10 and 11.
The science curriculum links closely with other subject areas e.g the maths, design technology, food technology and PE curriculum, with pupils using practical investigations to reinforce key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
